The Akondo Flower
which is scientifically known as Calotropis gigantea, the crown flower, is species  of Calotropis native to Cambodia,Vietnam,Bangladesh,Indonesia,Malaysia,Thailand,Sri Lanka,India,China,Pakistan, and Nepal. The flowers are long-lasting, and in Thailand, they are used in floral arrangements. The extract of flowers and leaves has shown a hypoglycemic effect in preclinical studies. They were favored by the Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani, who considered them a symbol of royalty and wore them strung into leis. In Cambodia, they are used in funerals to decorate the urn or sarcophagus and the interior of the house holding the funeral. The fruit is a follicle and when dry, seed dispersal is by the wind. In Indonesia, its flowers are called Widuri. In India, the plant is common in the compounds of temples and is known as madar in Hindi: मदार. Its leaf (Marathi: rui) is one of the five leaves used in the Panch Pallava, a ritual assortment of five different leaves used as a totem by the Maratha culture in India.[9]

The crown flower preferably is the most loved flower by Lord Shiva, as stated in ‘Shiva Purana’. The thriving beauty in the blooming Akondo flower being abloomed, with an ethereal and heavenly aroma that is aesthetically pleasing even to the prime gods such as Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha, is astonishing.

But other than being the favorite of the prime lords, Akondo, or the Crown flower has its mythical significance due to its anatomy and its mere creation and for its distinctive color itself.

According to the ‘Shiva Purana’, the madar flower which is also known as the crown flower is used to make garlands for worshiping or puja for its ornamental brilliant color and dainty appearance. It is mainly offered to lord shiva for peace, stability, and prosperity in society. The Crown flower is also one of the major parts of the nine astrological trees (Navagraha tree).

The crown flower tree which we can identify by the name ‘The Aak Plant’ is used for various religious purposes and plays a very important role in religion as it is regarded as one of the most sacred plants in Hinduism.

The Akondo flower plant or the Aak plant can be planted in front of the house as its mere presence can ward off any dark magic done against the residents of the house.

Even the root of the akondo / crown flower plant has its spiritual auspicious value. If The root of the Aak plant is used to carve a statue of lord Ganesha and is placed and worshipped regularly, one will be blessed with ‘TRISHUKHA’, or all joys of life. As the root of the crown flower tree belongs to the Ravipushya star, one can wrap the root of the aak plant in red cloth and keep it clean and in a safe place. It will ultimately bring happiness, peace, and prosperity in one home and their respective life as well. As the Great Sage Goutam Buddha said, “If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly our whole life would change”
