BEL FLOWER & ITS MYTHOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE

Bel flower, otherwise known as ‘Bael’, is the most favorable one to the almighty lord, Shiva. Also scientifically known as ‘Jasminum sambac’, In Sri Lanka, it is widely known as pichcha or gaeta pichcha. The names sithapushpa and katarolu are also used in older texts. The flowers are used in Buddhist temples and in ceremonial garlands with The English  common name  of "Arabian jasmine",  In India and Pakistan, it is very popular and is known as Mogra. It is also the national flower of the Philippines, where it is known as Sampaguita, as well as one of the three national flowers of Indonesia, where it is known as melati putih

With its abundant fragrance and aromatic breath-taking features adorning the bathing water for the idols of the Gods, the ‘Bael’ flower which is also known as the Jasmine Mogra flower may also is offered for puja for all kinds of gods. But specially embellish the extremities of the ‘Parambrahm’, Lord shiva.

Each year on the auspicious lunar day of “Baisakh Shukla Tritiya’ to ‘Jyastha Krishna Ashtami’ (according to the Hindu Calendar), the idols of Madan-Mohan, Panchadev, Laxmi Saraswati, and Rama-Krishna are abhisheked with the ’Bael’ flower or the ’Mogra’ flower water bath and Sandalwood paste.

The Bael flower or the Mogra is also known as “kund” in Sanskrit for its whiteness like snow, to depict the profusing beauty of “kund” or the Bel flower, we must recall the ‘Doha’ in Ramcharitas by Tulsidas in which he compares the embodiment of Lord shiva to ‘kund’ or the ‘Bael’ flower,

it is like this

Kund Indu Sam Deh Uma Raman karuna Ayan,
Jahi Deen par Neh Karahu Kripa Mardan Mayan.

This means that =The God whose body is like the Kund flower and the Moon (White and brilliant), loves Goddess Parvati, has affection for the poor, that Shiva who did repression of Kamadeva is pleased with me}

The exquisite and enchanting fragrance is also used to produce incense, (as in Mogra agarbatti), perfumes, or the ‘Itra’.

Other than the flower itself being significant for religious purposes, the leaf of the Jasmine or the Mogra flower also depicted as ‘Bel Patra is a leaf of the Bel / Bilva tree (Aegle Marmelos) and holds its compelling significance in the Hindu Mythology itself.

As per Puranas and Vedas, the leaf related to the flower is trifoliate which in Hindu belief signifies the holy Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The ‘Vedanta’ and the ‘Shiva Purana scriptures state that the leaf represents the three eyes of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, the pagan Lord, was very fond of Bilva leaves. It is said that the one who offers a trifoliate bel Patra to the Shivalinga with heartful and ultimate devotion, the Lord blesses those, and the object of their desires gets fulfilled.

 The ‘Bael leaf’ gets offered by people to God, and a part of the bael leaf is also taken back with the devotees to their home, they do so because the leaf is said to be able to absorb Shiva's energy. Thus, the leaf becomes a medium to go a step closer to Lord Shiva.
