Lighting a Diya or an Oil wick lamp is mandatory for daily worship

It is a common sight to see people light an oil wick lamp during pooja rituals or at religious gatherings and in temples as well. Even in residential homes, the woman of the house usually lights an oil wick lamp beside or below a Holy Basil plant within the perimeter of the house during the evening prayers in every household. Lighting a lamp has always been a close part of any Hindu ritual because fire is considered a mark of God Brahma and fire is a great purifier. The lamp that is lit is called a Deepak or a Diya and is traditionally made of clay within which oil is placed and a cotton wick is introduced which keeps the flame burning. The burning of the Diya is a symbolic act that portrays how the light of knowledge dispels the darkness of ignorance and brings the glow of wisdom to prevail all around.

Making a cotton wick for pooja is very hard work

People believe the gently dancing flames of an oil wick lamp radiate its positive energy within the confines of a room and remove negativity. In ancient times ghee was used the oil is the wick lamp, later people started using mustard oil coconut oil, or sesame oil depending on availability or financial situation of the user. Later, even the lamps were made of brass, steel, etc, however, one thing was always common which is the lamp had to have a cotton wick to help the fire draw the oil as it burns. This meant people had to make a wick from a ball of cotton before they could light a Diya, which was hard work and time-consuming. Making a cotton wick from cotton required deft hands which had adequate practice to make a wick. Anyone could not possibly make one without wasting time and some amount of cotton.
