Understand the importance of Kumkum

In Hinduism great importance is given to the act of applying Tilak and wearing of Kumkum irrespective of gender. The belief as accorded to it by the great masters is that it activates certain parts of the body which is essential for worship. In Esoteric Yoga or Hatha Yoga, there is the concept of seven power centers within the body that is called Chakras and there are seven such in our bodies. These chakras have been covered in ancient Hindu as well as Buddhist texts and have a huge following all over the world. The center of the forehead at the meeting of the eyebrows is the chakra called AGYNA and seems to coincide with the pineal gland. The Kumkum is used at this spot both by men and women to heighten the activity of this center.

What exactly is Kumkum made of?

Roli Kumkum is regularly worn by women as well as used in various aspects of Pooja Anusthana and is also applied to deities during worship. Kumkum is the very same thing that is generally called vermilion in English. Kumkum is a very safe product because it is created from natural compounds and is unlike Sindoor which is harmful because of its ingredients. Kumkum is created from a type of Turmeric that has a slightly reddish tint and is mixed with limestone to arrive at a typically beautiful red compound that is 100% safe for long-term use. The percentage of this mixture is around 95% of pure turmeric powder and a meager 5% of Limestone dust.

This is the reason why Kumkum is used

Application of this pure turmeric paste is something that is likely to excite the AGYNA chakra so that spiritual understanding develops quickly. The word Agyna means to command and that denotes that it activates the “Command Centre” within a person to activate the entire spiritual body. The application of the Tilak and the Kumkum is hence so important in the Hindu religion.
